Gürkan Özturan (1985, Kirklareli, Turkey) is the executive manager of the human rights-focused independent citizen journalism platform dokuz8NEWS, which publishes news emerging from social platforms and human rights networks across Turkey. The organization has recently started a project on Developing Data Journalism Capacity, in the shadow of the increasing repression of critical voices in Turkey. Özturan’s academic expertise and activism focuses on right wing populism, digital rights and liberties. He is a contributor to numerous digital and offline publications in Turkey and abroad, as well as a regular international speaker on press freedom and civil society.
Özturan is a board member of Turkey Europe Foundation, and cooperates with several other NGOs, including the Media Research Association.
He holds a BA in Western Languages from the Boğaziçi University (Istanbul); an MA in European Studies from Bilgi University (Istanbul) as well as an MA from the Institute européen -European Institute (Nice). Özturan also studied in Uppsala and Berlin.
