Literary journalism combines the power and authenticity of fact with the drama and resonance of fiction. It is a sophisticated hybrid that borrows from both fiction and nonfiction to create a unique and compelling way to tell stories. It is factual stories based on careful, thorough, ethical reporting. It is also crafted stories with plot and character and setting, conflict and resolution, a narrative arc.
How do you do that? (And why would you want to?) What are the building blocks of Literary Journalism? In this six-session workshop, we will read and discuss outstanding examples of literary journalism as we practice the art of nonfiction storytelling, building block by building block. Be prepared to think, write and work!
Lauren Kessler, an award-winning literary journalist, immersion reporter and veteran fjum instructor, is the author of ten books of narrative journalism as well as numerous magazine articles.
