We like to think BIG about ideas and stories, about plot and narrative arc, structure and pacing. But all writing begins with the humble sentence, the purposeful, potent ordering of words. In this six-session workshop in English language, we will focus on the power of the sentence through presentations, examples, short exercises, and question and answer critiques.

Session #1:  THE ART OF THE SENTENCE.

The power of grammar, the well-chosen word, tone and voice, rhythm, and pace.

Session #2: THE FIRST SENTENCE.

Inviting the reader in. Seven approaches to opening sentences. Learning from examples. (Exercise #1 due next session: a great first sentence)

Session #3: SHARING AND COMPARING.

Critiquing, editing, improving that first sentence. (Based on your work, exercise #1)

Session #4: SENTENCES THAT BRING CHARACTERS TO LIFE.

Description dialog, action, thought; the “telling detail.” (Exercise #2: 1-2 sentences that capture a character due next session)

Session #5: SHARING AND COMPARING plus SENTENCES THAT SKETCH A LANDSCAPE.

A short discussion and critique of character-revealing sentences. (Based on your work, exercise #2) Sentences that bring a place to life. (Exercise #3: 1-2 sentences that place the reader in your writing space due next session)

Session #6: SHARING AND COMPARING plus SENTENCES THAT END A STORY

A short discussion and critique of landscape-sketch sentences. (Based on your work, exercise #3). What an “end” sentence looks like. Why endings are so hard to write.
