Monica Hirst is a Brazilian scholar based in Rio de Janeiro,
specialising in regional security, Latin American foreign policy, and
regional cooperation. She has taught international relations at several
South American and US universities and has served as a visiting lecturer
at Stanford University, the University of São Paulo, Harvard
University, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina.
Professor
Hirst has also worked as an independent consultant for the UNDP, the
Ford Foundation, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), NOREF, and
the foreign ministries of Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil. She is
currently co-coordinator of CONLAT (Latin American Conversatorium) at
the IESP of the State University of Rio de Janeiro and a frequent
contributor to the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung publication Nueva Sociedad.

Hirst holds a PhD in Strategic Studies from the Federal University of
Rio Grande do Sul (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul).
