Topic and Format
An informal dialogue with Monica Hirst,
Brazilian security expert, on Latin American perspectives on Europe and
China, Brazil’s international aspirations, perceptions of the wars in
Ukraine and the Middle East, and the reasons why certain Latin American
countries support US President Donald Trump.
Speaker
Monica
Hirst is a Brazilian scholar based in Rio de Janeiro, specialising in
regional security, Latin American foreign policy, and regional
cooperation. She has taught international relations at several South
American and US universities and has served as a visiting lecturer at
Stanford University, the University of São Paulo, Harvard University,
and the Federal University of Santa Catarina.
Professor Hirst has
also worked as an independent consultant for the UNDP, the Ford
Foundation, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), NOREF, and the
foreign ministries of Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil.
Topic
As
the EU grows increasingly concerned about its international standing
and seeks to win hearts and minds in the Global South, Monica Hirst —
co-author of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung study Latin American Views on
Europe and the World — will present the findings of this ten-country
survey. She will focus on perceptions of Europe, China, and the United
States, while also discussing Brazil’s international ambitions.
