Vasily V. Gatov (Moscow/Boston), Mass Media and Communications researcher, analyst, media manager and media investment expert.


Since 1985, Gatov has been working in most media industries: news agencies, newspapers, magazines, TV/radio, media management in TV and publishing, printing, etc.

Selection of professional activities:

2014-present: Visiting Fellow, Center of Communication Leadership & Policy, Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism, University of Southern California. The research project focuses on the last 25 years of Russian media history.

2010-2013 Organizing Board for «Future of Media» Forum (, responsible for the content program of the Forum as well as guest speaker selection.

2010-2012 Lecturer at Higher School of Economics (School of Media Communications and School of Integrated Communications), delivering a course for graduate students on «Innovation in Media Companies» and also selected seminars on new media foundations, digital PR & public communications practices.

2011-2014, Head of the Novosti MediaLab (New Media Technologies LLC) – a research and development arm of the biggest Russian news & information agency RIA Novosti (apparently reorganized under President Putin’s decree). Under his management Novosti Media Lab had conducted a number of research projects that received a broad recognition both in Russian science circles and professional media community.

2006-2012 vice-president of the Russian Publisher’s Guild ( for research and technology and still holds the position in The Guild’s Board.

In 2008, Gatov was elected Board Member of IFRA ( and consequently became Board Member of WAN-IFRA after a merger of two major international associations in newspaper’s world.

2005-2010 Director of Strategy, Adviser to the Board – Media3 ( pre-2008 – Media Investment Division of «Promsvyazcapital»)

1996-1999 Deputy CEO, News Service Director, Producer – RenTV Channel

General management, creative management, investor relations for one of the first Russian independent TV networks.

Prior to 1996: Jjournalist and news producer for various Russian and international media, such as ABC News, BBC News & Current Affairs, ZDF and SAT1(Germany), WTN, Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), Izvestia Daily, Moskovsky Komsomolets.
